Outdoor Vending

For Visitors

Outdoor vendors are an integral part of the ByWard Market experience.  Unlike some other market experiences, you'll find ByWard Market vendors outside, no matter the weather, 363 days per year (closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day)!

Typically, agri-food vendors are open from May to October from 7:00 a.m. and remain open until 6:00 p.m.  Bad weather will rarely stop them from selling.  Art and craft vendors usually operate from mid-May to mid-September and start at 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 or 9:00 p.m.

Produce Availability

What's on the menu?  See below to find out what type of produce is available on the ByWard Market at various times of the year.  It should be noted that these dates are approximations.  The actual availability may vary from year to year, depending on the weather conditions.  Contact Markets Management for up-to-date information. 613-244-4410.

Throughout the year, vendors selling a variety of items ranging from purple cauliflower to artwork made out of sand & banana tree leaves, including Christmas wreaths and hot dogs, make their way to the ByWard Market to display their products.  If you have a unique item that you think would be sucessful please read on.

There are three (3) categories of products that can be sold on the ByWard Market: art and crafts, agri-food, and refreshments.  For each of these categories, the Interim Markets By-law 191-95 specifies what types of products can be sold, as well as the criterion that needs to be met.

Art and Craft

Markets By-law 191-95 defines "art and craft" as "handmade goods produced or created from raw or basic materials which are changed into a significantly different shape, design, form or function using a special skill or manual art".

For more information on the application requirements for Art and Craft products, please see A&C Application Information. (attachment to come)

Agri-food

Vendors may apply to sell agri-food products (fruits, vegetables, plants, roots, seeds, cereal and cereal products, mushrooms, eggs, fish, meat, poultry, game, dairy products, honey products, maple products, horticultural and flori-cultural products), trees, shrubs, sod, soil, firewood, Christmas trees, boughs, wreaths, garlands and decorations.

For more information on the application requirements for agri-food products, please see Agri-food Application Information. (attachment to come)

Refreshments

Vendors may apply to sell refreshments, defined as "food or drink prepared for immediate consumption" as currently permitted under the Interim Markets By-law 191-95.  Please note that health regulations apply to the sale of refreshments.  Contact a Public Health Inspector for more information on refreshment carts and inspection requirements. 613-580-6744 x. 23748

Please note that, as Markets Management are operating under an interim by-law, approved applicants may not qualify to vend on the Market under the provisions of any new By-law.
