Favorite Pets: Jack at Karma Wear
Walk
through the door into Karma Wear (110 Parent Street), Ottawa’s
first eco-boutique, and--unless it’s time for his afternoon
nap--you will be met by Jack, a friendly mixture of German
Shepard and Jack Russell Terrier. He’ll come trotting
up to nuzzle your hand and is happy to have his back gently
stroked. Jack may even choose to accompany you as you browse
through the stylishly comfortable (and figure-flattering)
body wear made from hemp, bamboo, soy and organic cottons.
Karma Wear owner, Sarah Kincaid, first met Jack when he
was 2 ½ years old and had spent most of his life locked
outside. Lonely and bored, this intelligent dog was despondent
and had stopped eating. Sarah took him home where, after much
coaxing and praising, she was thrilled to see him eating and
drinking again. Since then, they’ve been constant companions.
Jack more than repaid Sarah’s kindness during the 18
hour-a-day whirlwind of opening her own business and the subsequent
long days by faithfully reminding her of the benefits of both
healthy eating and a couple of brisk walks every day, no matter
how busy life is.
He’s part of the ByWard Market’s nanny association
and stress management team. He looks after children when their
parents are shopping in the store—one little admirer,
Abby, visits regularly and writes stories about Jack. A lawyer
who travels too much to share her life with a dog often pops
in for some Jack time. One local business owner makes a point
of coming over to sit on the floor and cuddle with Jack.
Sarah points out “He has a great life and really enjoys
customers—but he has his own little private space where
he can be admired but left alone until he has regained some
more play energy.”
No fan of winter (Sarah thinks he may be channelling his
inner feline when it comes to water), Jack is looking forward
to the time of year when his paws won’t get wet on every
walk. In the mean time, he gives his famous doggy smile to
welcome you through the doors of Karma Wear.
