La dualité inhérente au fait qu’on n’est pas un Canadien de souche se situe au cœur de l’œuvre de l’artiste. Balancing Act [Une question d’équilibre] se classe sous le thème de l’ouverture aux opinions contradictoires : les difficultés initiales de l’artiste à reconnaître son héritage japonais, puis son acceptation subséquente. Des formes abstraites se mêlent aux images de l’ancien Japon. Alors que les peintures témoignent d’une recherche ardue d’harmonie et d’équilibre entre les deux mondes, elles constituent, en définitive, une célébration du double héritage de l’artiste.
